Love, Ruby Lavender by Deborah Wiles

Ruby Lavender is a 9-year old girl living in Halleluia, Mississippi who has a wonderful correspondence going on with her grandmother, Miss Eula, with whom she spends half her days. That is, until Miss Eula goes to Hawaii and leaves Ruby to care for the 3 chickens they stole from the man who was closing his chicken farm and going to send all the chickens to the slaughterhouse.
But Miss Eula's absence isn't the biggest obstacle to Ruby's happiness this summer. She has to deal with Mabel Jane, her sworn enemy, whose father died in the same accident that took Ruby's grandfather's life the summer before.
How will Ruby deal with the challenges facing her? You'll have to read this darling, surprising, heartwarming, goodness-filled book to find why Miss Eula says, "Life does go on!"

This book has a "grandmother/granddaughter reading group guide" included. What a great idea!
