On Market Street by Arnold Lobel, illustrated by Anita Lobel
Here's another wonderful ABC book. The detailed illustrations by Anita Lobel are a feast for the eyes.
The merchants down on Market Street
Were opening their doors.
I stepped along that Market Street
I stopped at all the stores.
Such wonders there on Market Street!
So much to catch the eye!
I strolled the length of Market Street
To see what I might buy.
And I bought...
Especially clever in this book is how each letter is the item purchased covering a person's body, i.e. a man made of apples or a lady made of doughnuts.
What does the little boy who empties his bank to buy something for each letter of the alphabet do with so many purchases? That's the surprise at the end of the book. We think it's a bit strange, but it makes it all the more fun to read!
You can preview this book on google.
