Five girls in one family makes an "all-of-a-kind" family! This tale highlights the life of a Jewish immigrant family living in Lower East Side New York at the turn of the century. It is great reading for elementary age children and can be read aloud to young girls and boys alike. In our family, we enjoyed learning more about the Jewish traditions and holidays, and life for a family "back then," no matter their religion. The story is full of happy family memories unintentionally highlighting solid values as well as a little romance that adds some adventure.
Note to Moms: If you're looking for a good book to read with an older child who has been the baby of the family but not for long, here's one for your list. You will appreciate the last chapter (Oops! There's a spoiler for you!).
This is the first book in a series written autobiographically, again by a mother for her own daughter, like many delightful children's stories. It was first published in the early 1950's but has been reprinted since then.
